The Rev. Dr. Dennis Calhoun, Senior Minister

Dennis has served as our Senior Minister since September of 2007.  Prior to coming to Marblehead, he served churches in New Milford and Middlebury, Connecticut.  He holds degrees from the University of Missouri-Saint Louis, Yale Divinity School, and Princeton Theological Seminary, but credits the members of the churches he has served as his most influential teachers.  Dennis and his wife Susan, Professor of  Nursing at Endicott College, enjoy frequent visits from their  daughters, Elly and Abby.  They share their home in Marblehead with a dachshund named Texas. The Rev. Karla Miller, Minister for Community Life

Karla joined pastoral staff in November 2013.  She has served churches in Boston and North Carolina.  She studied at Wheaton College in Illinois, and Union Theological Seminary in NYC.

She loves being outside, pretending to knit, handbuilding clay sacramental ware, and most any animal.  She and her wife, Liz, live in Medford, with a passel of cats and a few dogs.  She is a regular contributor to the RevGalBlogPals, an online international community for women in ministry.

maria_van_kalkenMaria van Kalkan, Director of Music

Maria celebrates her twenty-sixth season in charge of Old North’s flourishing music program. Maria earned the degree of Bachelor of Music in Organ Performance from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music (Oberlin, Ohio) and Master of Music from the New England Conservatory of Music (Boston, MA). Her studies abroad have included pipe organ performance at the Sweelinck Conservatorium in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, under the patronage of the Rotary International Scholarship Fund, and the completion of an historical organ performance program in Pistoia, Italy.

In addition to her work as Minister of Music—playing organ and directing the Senior Choir—Maria is Artistic Director of Concerts at Old North, presenting between two and six chamber music concerts annually, in the acoustically-glorious Old North Church in Marblehead. Maria is a senior staff member of the Boston Early Music Festival (; as Assistant to the Executive Director, Maria is liaison to musicians from all over the world for the biennial Baroque opera, annual Chamber Opera Series, and opera touring and recording projects.

For the past seven years, Maria has served as Special Assistant to the President of the Constellation Center for the Performing Arts ( in Cambridge, MA.

Karen Kilty, Director of Children’s Ministries


Karen joined the staff of Old North on January 1, 2017.  She is  a life-long member of Maple Street Congregational Church in Danvers and has served there in many capacities, including Deacon, high school church teacher, acolyte coordinator and Yoga-as-Faith formation.  She is a spiritual director, and has completed the “Gateways to God” program, training in spiritual direction and congregational formation at Rolling Ridge Retreat Center in North Andover. She completed the Christian Education Certification program with the Massachusetts Conference of the United Church of Christ, which gave her the opportunity to deepen her understanding of faith development and who we are as people of the United Church of Christ. Karen also served as Program Coordinator for the Center of Spirituality and Leadership at Rolling Ridge Retreat Center.   She is grateful to be called to companion people of all ages, and now especially ONC children and families, along their faith journey.  You can reach Karen at

Meg Arbo, Office Administrator

Meg joined the office staff in the fall of 2013.  She is a member of Old North,  and she and her husband and daughters live in Marblehead.  When not  figuring out PowerChurch (our database) she enjoys being with her family, watching the sunset, and making healthy and delicious food.

becca_kenneallyRebecca Kenneally, Youth Choirs Director

Rebecca Kenneally has been the Old North Church Youth Choirs Director for 14 years, conducting the Cecelia Choir and Parish Singers, as well as the Festival Youth Chorus. She is Chair of the Performing Arts Department and Director of Choral Activities, at Endicott College. Previously, she was the Director of the Women’s Chorus at The New England Conservatory of Music.

Kenneally is proud of the growth of her ensembles. The Old North Choirs have grown from 12 members to 50 in her tenure, and the Endicott Singers, from six members in 2005 to 40 in 2014. The Old North Festival Youth Choir earned second place in the American Prize in 2011 under her direction. With the Endicott Singers, she has led collaborative programs with the United States Air Force Band of Liberty, the Beantown Swing Orchestra, the Millennium Gospel Choir, Symphony by the Sea and area colleges to establish the group as a competitive, college-level ensemble.

Kenneally is a board member for the Massachusetts chapter of the American Choral Directors Association, and has sent up to 11 youth (mostly from Old North Church) annually to ACDA National and Eastern Honor Choirs. Kenneally conducts the youth choirs at Music at Port Milford Chamber Music Festival in Ontario, Canada, where she is also a faculty soloist. She sings regularly with chamber and orchestral concerts and at area churches.

Her theater directing credits include: Annie Get Your Gun (EC 2013), Cabaret (EC 2012), Pippin (EC 2011), Carnival (EC 2010), Kiss Me Kate (EC 2009); How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying(EC2008), and The Last Five Years (Marblehead Little Theater 2008), scenes director for Boston University Opera Scenes and NEC Light Opera Scenes, as well as youth music direction for Boston Lyric Opera’s The Little Prince, and Boston Early Music Festival’s Acteon and Venus and Adonis. Kenneally holds degrees in voice and conducting from Northwestern University and The New England Conservatory of Music.

Kenneally lives in Marblehead with her husband, Jeremy Bumagin, their daughter, Ila, and their labradoodle, Lacey.

sandySandra Barret, Bell Choirs Director

Sandra graduated from the Eastman School of Music with a degree in Music Education.  She has taught and directed instrumental music in churches, public and private schools, professional and cummunity events, and privately for most of her adult life.
