Old North Church in Marblehead, Massachusetts (www.onchurch.org) is accepting applications for a part-time Youth Choir Director who will expand and strengthen three (3) Youth Choirs – the Cecilia Choir (grades 1-3), Parish Singers (grades 4-8), and the prize-winning Old North Festival Youth Chorus (a community youth chorus combining the Parish Singers and young singers from neighboring towns, for an annual Christmas concert in early December).  The ideal candidate would effectively translate a passion for liturgical music while demonstrating how valuable and important the gift of ensemble music-making can be in our daily lives.  In addition, the Youth Choir Director would to serve as a mentor, trusted adviser, and role model for our young and enthusiastic singers.  Old North Church is an inclusive, Open and Affirming congregation of the United Church of Christ, first gathered in 1635.

Job Description:

The Youth Choir Director at Old North Church is a part-time position, highlighted by the following responsibilities: selecting music, rehearsing, and directing two (2) Youth Choirs and the Old North Festival Youth Chorus (Cecilia Choir and Parish Singers are expected to sing at one 10am Worship Service per month, for nine months of the year); maintaining the Youth Choir Music Library; caring for all equipment related to this department (robes, musical instruments, office copier, and supplies, etc.).  

Hours are flexible but the following time commitments are necessary:

  • Weekly Rehearsals (Wednesday afternoons from 3:30 to 5:30pm, September through May)

Cecilia Choir: 3:30 to 4:15pm

Parish Singers: 4:30 to 5:30pm (*)

(*) Old North Festival Youth Chorus: 5 to 6pm, October and November 

  • Participation in 10am Sunday Worship Service once per month (September through May)

Requirements of this position:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Mature and well-grounded group leadership expertise and resourcefulness
  • Strong interpersonal skills 
  • A willingness to: regularly recruit young singers; work effectively with minsters, staff colleagues, members of the lay ministry, and church members; motivate current Youth Choir participants; perfect Youth Choir ensemble practices and performances
  • Basic keyboard and music theory skills, and an awareness of proper singing techniques
  • Computer or access to a computer, printer or access to a printer
  • Knowledge of Congregational-UCC worship demonstrating the ability to select appropriate Youth Choir music
  • Comfort with principles of training, teaching, and instruction of young singers
  • An ability to maintain contact lists, handle annual registration and associated paperwork, undertake various administrative tasks, and provide timely information for the weekly church bulletin as needed
  • A willingness to communicate with parents about schedules and events

Requirements of this position, continued

  • Establish suitable recognition for cumulative years of participation and milestones in Youth Choirs
  • Time-permitting, organize special events such as caroling, celebrations, singing at local assisted care facilities, and the annual Talent Show
  • Maintain the Youth Choir Music Library—order and photocopy music, within the boundaries of proper ASCAP and copyright regulations 


  • Minimum of BS/BA (Music Education or Performance) degree or equivalent

Responsibilities and Expectations:

  • Approximately 13 hours of work per week for 9 months of the year (September – May), inclusive of Wednesday afternoon rehearsals and one (1) Sunday service per month
  • Plans and directs weekly Wednesday afternoon rehearsals (September to May)
  • Plans and directs warm-up rehearsal on one Sunday per month at 9am, followed by 10am Worship Service (September to May)
  • Selects music appropriate for Sunday services according to the liturgy of the Service, the liturgical season, and comfort and capability of the Youth Choirs – under the supervision of the Minister of Music
  • Responsible for teaching and challenging the Youth Choirs with new and fresh material as well as preserving traditional church music
  • Recruit, mentor, and develop the musical growth of Youth Choir members 
  • Administer Youth Choir funds for music and equipment purchase under the supervision of the Minister of Music and the Music Committee
  • Attend occasional Music Committee and Staff Meetings, as needed

Other Expectations:

The Youth Choir Director is expected to organize music and direct the Youth Choirs at the following special [annual] Services as part of the regular church calendar:

  • Music Sunday (typically in late May)
  • Easter Sunday (1 Service)
  • Two (2) Old North Festival Chorus Concerts (first weekend of December)

  • This position is defined as a “part-time salaried position” (a W-2 form will be issued); there is no paid vacation or other benefits
